2013 National Underclass Session 3
Michael Cruz is a 2014 C/3B with a 5-11 185 lb. frame from Aguadilla, PR. Large frame, strong angular build. Really stood out with the bat, arguably the top hitter in attendance. Hit three home runs in BP, just missed another during game action with a high fly ball off the top of the fence in RF of City of Palms Park (MLB Spring Training park). Short to the ball, long through with plus leverage and strength at contact. Hammers the ball with authority, big separation of upper and lower halves, leg kick trigger, very good power oriented swing, very good bat speed, power carried over into games well, serious juice. Strong pullside tendency, wasn't forced to change approach by level of pitching he faced, tools to hit against higher level pitching though he may need time to learn to make the adjustments, good upside with the bat. Takes charge behind the plate, posted impressive 1.81 pop time in workout, solid arm strength, quick hands and release, quick actions behind the plate, gets rid of the ball quickly. Also showed well at 3B, made a great diving stop to his left in game to rob a single off of what should have been a rocket line drive through the 5-6 hole. Interesting young prospect to follow.
