LATEST PG SHOWCASE REPORT
2006 National Showcase
Tim Alderson is a 2007 right hand pitcher from Horizon HS, residing in Phoenix, AZ. Alderson has a long, rangy, lanky, flexible build on his still developing 6'7" 208 lb. frame. Alderson has perhaps the best combination of raw stuff and pitchability of the top pitchers in the showcase and was ranked #9 among PG National Top 85 pitchers. He pitches from a high 3/4 slot and has a very quick, loose, aggressive arm. There is a quick stab on the backside, from where he cranks up his plus arm speed. Alderson's delivery may look herky jerky and perhaps out of control, but it isn't. He repeats it very well and does nothing but throw strikes. There is an awful lot of energy going on with him on the mound and hitters much feel as if he just keeps coming and coming after them. Alderson can give up some solid contact because he throws so many strikes, but rarely is that contact in the air or really ripped. Hitters generally shorten their swings to hit against him and simply hit hard ground balls, seemingly right at the defensive players more often than not. Alderson is a strike thrower with a fastball that can touch up to 95 and sits in the 90-93 range. His stuff is hot in the zone, including his quick breaking 82-84 mph slider. The action on that pitch is late and sharp, getting a lot of swing throughs, though he can also use to steal strikes and pitch backward if he wanted to. Alderson does not generally use his change-up, but has one. Many scouts have suggested already that he is a closer in waiting and Alderson may have bought into that, as he pitches out of the stretch. He is one of the top power, yet still projectable arms in this '07 high school draft class and should get plenty of crosschecker attention in the spring.
