2004 South Top Prospect Showcase
Aaron Smith is a 2005 C/3B from McKinney, TX, who is a strong and solid 6'3", 200 lb. athlete with a pro type body. We saw Smith play much more third base in Waco and were extremely impressed by his defensive skills at that position. Smith’s athletic ability moving to and through the ball is good, and his arm strength is solid big league average right now. Ignore the workout velocity times on Smith’s arm, it’s a cannon during game situations and Smith was able to show it on many occasions. We’ll reserve judgment on his catching skills until later, but he looks good there too. He also runs fairly well for a big guy and shows excellent instincts. Smith also swung the bat very well. His swing is a bit on the long side due to a bat head wrap in his load, but he’s strong and gets the bat head through the zone in a hurry. Smith had three line drive hits against quality pitching, including doubles over both the left fielder and right fielder’s heads, and showed very nice extension and power in his swing. Overall, Smith was one of the better prospects at the showcase. Aaron is an excellent student.
