2006 California Underclass
Marty Medina is a 2007 RHP/OF from Woodcreek HS, residing in Antelope, CA, with a 5'11" 165 lb. frame. He has an average build, though pretty lean and athletic. A primary pitcher, Medina has a nice long arm stroke. He pitches from a high 3/4 slot and showed decent rhythm in his delivery. His fastball topped out at 79 mph and had a little life on the arm side. Medina went in and out pretty well and showed an understanding of how to pitch with the fastball. His breaking ball was a slurvy curveball in the 64-68 mph range and he did a nice job of using it to get some strikes. Medina should be able to use that curveball to steal strikes in fastball counts. His change-up was in the 69-71 mph range and Medina threw it with good arm speed. He generally showed good feel for the ball and for pitching. He showed some aggressiveness to the zone with his stuff. There were times when his arm got to extension which increased the quality of his pitches. The longer he can hold the ball, the better his stuff is. His arm action works be he will need to develop more overall physical strength. As a right-handed hitter, Medina showed a flat, short swing and stayed vertically stacked pretty well while showing some decent bat speed. He should be considered a follow prospect at the small college level on the mound. He understands how to pitch and a velo jump appears to be in his future.
