2005 Atlantic Coast Top Prospect Showcase
Pierce is a live bodied 6-1, 155 lb outfielder/pitcher from Virginia. He has a very young, projectable body that hasn't really started getting strong yet. Pierce was one of the best athletes at the showcase and can pretty much do everything well on the baseball field. He ran 7.08 and threw 84 mph from the outfield while showing easy actions and good range on defense. Pierce is a left handed hitter with a smooth, easy swing and very good bat speed. He has some lift in his swing and can get the ball up the gaps with authority. He made solid game contact and is an advanced hitter. We saw Pierce pitch last year when he was really just starting to pitch regularly. He has really, really improved during the last year. Pierce has smooth pitching mechanics with a full hands over head delivery and a quick, smooth arm stroke. He threw his fastball 83-85 mph with very good cutting and sinking life. His out pitch was a 68-71 mph curveball that was very sharp and late and overmatched the showcase hitters completely. Pierce is a legit 2-way Division I prospect who really could be considered a 2007 prospect because of his young body and the amount of projection he has left. We like him a bit better as a pitcher given his improvement at that position but that's only by a narrow margin. Very good follow!
