Jimmy Messer is a 2008 RHP with a 6'1'', 195 lb. frame from Hudson, NC who attends South Caldwell HS. He has a mature build with very good present strength. Messer has a high energy delivery with a lot of effort and recoil on release but he repeats it well, stays balanced over the rubber and seemed to have no problem throwing strikes. He has a high 3/4's release on his fastball and curveball but a much lower release on his change up, so that will to be addressed. He will be a challenge for pitching coaches on what to address and what to leave as it is. Messer's fastball topped out at 93 mph and it got on hitters quickly. His best pitch was a hard curveball that was up to 80 mph with very late, hard bite. He pitched with his curveball and it is a big time strike out pitch with its power and depth. He showed some feel for his change up that hopefully translates to a higher release point. It will be interesting to watch if Messer can maintain his mechanics/delivery high in pitch counts against top level competition. He is a very good student who has a verbal commitment to North Carolina.
