Derek Eligio is a 2007 OF/IF with a 6'2'', 180 lb. frame from Yorba Linda CA, who attends Esperanza HS. Selected as a Top 10 Prospect at this event. Eligio is a lean, strong, athletic player with some explosiveness in his body. He plays the game quite easily and with good feel. Each time we have seen him he is better than the last time. Eligio has very good bat speed and a lively swing, generated with easy effort. He accelerates his hands through contact and does a very nice job of hitting hard line drives from gap to gap. In time he is going to start carrying balls over the fence. He centers the ball on the barrel on a consistent basis. Eligio is a polished, three-hole type hitter with very good present day ability, but is even more exciting to consider what he will be in a few years. Defensively he is a versatile, talented player. In the outfield he has good tools and even better instincts. His raw speed may not suggest that he can play centerfield at a higher level, but his instincts, angles, and jumps on the ball all play well at that position. He is a good student and is going to be one of the top spring recruits in the 2007 class.
