LATEST PG SHOWCASE REPORT
2004 World Showcase
Copeland was the top prospect at the World Showcase and solidified his ranking among the top 2004 prospects in the country. Everyone knows about Copeland’s outstanding arm strength but it seemed as if he wanted to make sure everyone noticed just a little extra. Normally RHP/3B, Copeland threw from both the outfield and from behind the plate in the skills workout and recorded the two best velocities at each position, 92 mph from the outfield and 89 mph with the gear on. Copeland’s 89 mph time, is believed to be the top velocity ever recorded on a catcher at a Perfect Game event. Copeland took a very strong batting practice, knocking a couple balls over the fence and showing above well average MLB raw power potential, but it’s beginning to look more and more like Copeland will be considered a pitcher first by pro scouts. Although listed at 6-3, 200 lbs, Copeland resembles Colorado Rockies RHP Jason Jennings, a former College Player of the Year and NL Rookie of the Year. He has very strong hips and upper thighs and uses them to the maximum in his delivery. Copeland’s second warm up pitch clocked in at 93 mph and he touched 95 mph a couple times in game competition in the unusually frigid Ft Myers climate. His curveball was not quite as hard and deep as it was in Jupiter in October, clocking in at 77-78 mph but we’ve seen the plus breaking ball in the past. Copeland has no problem throwing strikes or repeating his delivery, either. Remember the Jason Jennings comparison. Josh has committed to Alabama.
