Final HS Rankings: Top Teams By State

With high school season officially wrapped up in every state, except for Iowa, the end of year high school content is officially out and this our first crack at crowning the top team in each of the states that play high school baseball for the 2022 season. While most states have a variety of different classifications, which means many state champions, these selections aren’t just based on the highest classification’s champion; these selections represent what we believe to be the best overall resume in each state for the entirety of the season. Whether that means a state championship put one team over the top or a team was dominant enough as a whole (regular season + playoff run), this is about choosing the best team to represent each state.
 
Alabama | Hartselle (Hartselle, Ala.); Record: 39-4
This team won the 6A State Title by closing the year with 24 straight wins. They had signature wins over powerhouse Hoover (Ala.), Florida’s 3A State Champion North Broward Prep (Fla.), East Forsyth (N.C.), Alabama’s 5A State Champion Russellville (Ala.) and 7A’s Auburn (Ala.).
 
Alaska | South Anchorage (Anchorage, Alaska); Record: 19-0
Coming off an undefeated 2021, they repeated as the Division I state champions with another perfect year at 19-0. The program now sits at 44 straight wins over the last two-plus years and Curtis Hebert was named the State Player of the Year by just about every national publication.
 
Arizona | Hamilton (Chandler, Ariz.); Record: 29-4
This roster was jam-packed with talent coming into the spring and there was no shortage of production. They battled their way to Arizona’s 6A State Title and showed well against some big names including wins over Chandler (Ariz.), American Fork (Utah) and Buford (Ga.) early spring.
 
Arkansas | Marion (Marion, Ark.); Record: 29-5
It was a solid regular season schedule where they picked up a handful of solid wins and they were dominant through the playoffs as they outscored opponents 33 to 6 on their way to winning Arkansas’ 5A State Title over a very talented Van Buren program who won it in 2021.
 
California | JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.); Record: 25-11
Coming off a very subpar start to their season, given they were 6-9 at one point, they got red hot and closed their last 21 games with a 19-2 record including winning the Division I Southern Section playoffs and posting wins over Harvard Westlake (Calif.), Orange Lutheran (Calif.), Villa Park (Calif.) and Notre Dame SO (Calif.) along the way.
 
Colorado | Legacy (Broomfield, Colo.); Record: 27-4
They fell in the state title game of Class 5A but the totality of the year they had is what makes them representative of Colorado’s the top team. They posted a 27-4 record and racked up a number of wins against talented teams, finishing one of the toughest schedules in the state.
 
Connecticut | St Paul Catholic (Bristol, Conn.); Record 24-0
Avenging their late playoff loss from a year ago, this team was flawless through the course of their season, finishing a perfect 24-0 and winning the Class S State Title. Not only did they not lose a game, they outscored opponents an impressive 271 to 28 along the way.
 
Delaware | Cape Henlopen (Lewes, Del.); Record: 21-2
After losing two of their first three games of the season, including one to a nationally ranked Archbishop Spalding (Md.), this team never looked back as they rolled off 20 straight on their way to the Division I state title, making them the clear-cut top team in the state of Delaware.
 
District of Columbia | Gonzaga (Washington, D.C.); Record: 23-12
It was a ‘historic year’ according to the program for Gonzaga as they took home the DC State Championship and did so in resilient fashion. They had heroics along their way to racking up 23 wins and DC’s player of the year Nick Morabito was certainly a large part of their big success.
 
Florida | Stoneman Douglas (Parkland, Fla.); Record: 30-2
As if winning back-to-back 7A State Titles in Florida wasn’t enough, this team put together one of the best resumes in the entire country. They beat multiple state title teams and won four straight games against big teams back in April to win the National High School Invitational too.
 
Georgia | North Oconee (Bogart, Ga.); Record: 39-1
With their lone loss coming very early in the spring, this team rolled off 36 straight wins to close the year on their way to Georgia’s 4A State Title and the best record in the state by far. They’ve got a very impressive pitching staff but averaging nearly 10 runs per game is also no small feat.
 
Hawaii | Waiakea (Hilo, Hawaii); Record: 11-0
This was a storybook season for this program after making deep playoff runs for three straight years as they finished off a perfect season with bringing the Division I State Title back to the big island. While they dominated the regular season, it was 3 tight wins in the playoffs that did it.
 
Idaho | Timberline (Boise, Idaho); Record: 23-5
It wasn’t the ending that this program wanted but a third-place finish in the state with a 23-5 record, a really talented roster and a number of wins against talented in-state programs throughout the year is very deserving of being crowned the top team in the state once again.
 
Illinois | Brother Rice (Chicago, Ill.); Record: 36-6
This is another team that unfortunately fell deep in their playoff run but finished the year with winning the third-place game and wrapping up a really impressive resume. They had wins over IMG Academy (Fla.), Baylor (Tenn.) and Trinity (Ky.) as well as numerous strong in-state wins to go with having arguably the top roster in the state too.
 
Indiana | Andrean (Merrillville, Ind.); Record: 31-4
With a 31-4 record and Indiana’s 3A State Title under their belt, this was an easy choice for who should be the top team in the state. They beat a handful of talented in-state and Chicago area teams throughout the year and took down the top arm in the state in the championship game.
 
Iowa | Johnston (Johnston, Iowa); Record: 27-3*
While Iowa high school baseball is the only state still going, as they play in the summer for the most part, Johnston looks very much like the top team in the state so far. They’re coming off a runner-up finish a year ago and have only three losses so far, leading the way in Class 4A.
 
Kansas | Blue Valley West (Stilwell, Kan.); Record: 23-2
It was an impressive year to say the least for this program and they capped it off by winning the 6A State Title for Kansas. They racked up 23 wins and with one of their only two losses coming at the hands of 5A State Champion Blue Valley Southwest, they were nearly flawless in 2022.
 
Kentucky | St. Xavier (Louisville, Ky.); Record: 34-10
With the state of Kentucky only crowning one champion for the state each year, it’s usually on the easier end to pick who the top team is, and St. Xavier was that. They won seven straight to win the title and also had big wins over Trinity (Ky.) and Brother Rice (Ill.) earlier in the spring.
 
Louisiana | West Monroe (West Monroe, La.); Record: 33-4
West Monroe sat just a spot behind Barbe all spring long but when they got the job done in winning the state’s top state title, in dramatic fashion, it became clear that they should be representing Louisiana at 33-4, not to mention that a good chunk of this roster is returning.
 
Maine | Thornton Academy (Saco, Maine); Record: 24-1
The Class A State Champions are widely regarded as the top team in the state of Maine each year and Thornton Academy made it more than clear this year reeling off 24 wins in 25 games while outscoring their opponents a drastic 219 to 37 behind Cody Bowker’s impressive 2022.
 
Maryland | Archbishop Spalding (Severn, Md.); Record: 29-4
It was a really impressive roster coming into the year and they got it done on the field as they finished off one of the toughest schedules in the state with a 29-4 record and took home the MIAA Class A State Title while also posting wins over some talented out-of-state programs.
 
Massachusetts | Austin Prep (Reading, Mass.); Record: 28-0
It’s hard to wins 28 games at all up in the Northeast, given the shortened amount of time teams have to get their full spring in, but when you win all 28 games on your schedule and take home a title, the Division 3 title in this case, it certainly warrants being recognized as tops in the state.
 
Michigan | Orchard Lake St. Mary’s (Orchard Lake, Mich.); Record: 44-0
It was a record-setting season in a number of ways for OLSM and their 44 wins is the most in a single season in Michigan history. Pair that with the roster they have and winning the Division I title while playing the toughest schedule they can put together between Michigan and Ohio, in a short time span, and you’ve got one of the top teams and resumes in the country.
 
Minnesota | Stillwater (Stillwater, Minn.); Record: 23-4
They were right at the top in the state just about all spring and they got the job done winning the Class 4A State Title for Minnesota while drastically outscoring their opponents as a whole on the season. This is their third state title in the last five seasons, excluding the 2020 spring.
 
Mississippi | Northwest Rankin (Brandon, Miss.); Record: 34-3
Winning the 6A State Title in Mississippi is never a small feat which usually makes that team the best in the state but Northwest Rankin more than established themselves as that. They won 34 games on the year while beating a number of good teams including Madison Central (Miss.), Hoover (Ala.) and Desoto Central (Miss.) on their way to a lofty national ranking as well.
 
Missouri | Liberty North (Liberty, Mo.); Record: 33-9
They put together a good season as a whole but it was avenging their late playoff loss from a year ago to win the Class 6 State Title this year that was the most important. This was a really talented roster on paper, and they showed it on the field in beating many of the state’s best.
 
Nebraska | Millard West (Omaha, Neb.); Record: 31-6
There might not have been a more dramatic state championship finish than the one that this team put together as AJ Tauber’s walk-off home run to the claim the Class A title went viral. This team played tough against some of the region’s best and beat many of the state’s best.
 
Nevada | Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nev.); Record: 35-7
This team fell short of claiming Nevada’s toughest state title but the talent on the roster and the season they put together is still very deserving of representing as Nevada’s best. They had 35 wins in a very difficult schedule and were nationally ranked inside the Top 20 all year long.
 
New Hampshire | Monadnock (East Swanzey, N.H.); Record: 20-0
It was a perfect year for the Huskies as they won all 20 games put in front of them and walked away with the state’s Division III title. They were dominant all the way through outscoring their opponents 250 to 37 along the way including an 11-2 win in the state championship game too.
 
New Jersey | Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, N.J.); Record: 24-5
The top ranked team from the Northeast from start to finish this spring, they finished the job that they set out to in winning the Non-Public A State Title and topping off one of the better resumes in the country. They beat a ton of the most talented programs from the region and shocked the country when they walked off Buford (Ga.) in the opening round of the NSHI.
 
New Mexico | Carslbad (Carlsbad, N.M.); Record: 27-4
This team made it pretty easy when it came to selecting the best team in the state as they put together an impressive 27 wins and won the 5A State Title in dominant fashion. They didn’t have very many close wins, in a good way, and had state player of the year Nolan Perry too.
 
New York | Chaminade (Mineola, N.Y.); Record: 24-2
This is an extremely talented team when it comes to looking at the roster on paper and they certainly showed they can play as they put together an impressive 24-2 record and won the state’s first ever CHSAA State Championship by shutting out an impressive Iona Prep team.
 
North Carolina | Providence (Charlotte, N.C.); Record: 34-0
After putting together one of the best seasons the state of North Carolina has seen in recent memory, where they went a perfect 34-0 and won the 4A title behind an impressive display from the senior class, they also propelled to being ranked as one of the top teams nationally.
 
North Dakota | Sheyenne (West Fargo, N.D.); Record: 23-9
It was a strong year for the Mustangs as they put up 23 wins in a cold-weather state and they capped it off by winning their second consecutive state title with the Class A title being the top in the state each year.
 
Ohio | Mason (Mason, Ohio); Record: 27-5
There are a number of programs in Ohio who are normally at the top in the state and although they fell just short of winning the Division I state title, their season was impressive enough to be named the top team in the state, including wins over Walsh Jesuit (Ohio) and Moeller (Ohio).
 
Oklahoma | Owasso (Owasso, Okla.); Record: 31-8
It was a bit of an up and down year at points for Owasso but as one of the state’s programs each year, they got the job done at the end and won the 6A State Title while posting wins over George Jenkins (Fla.), Jenks (Okla.), Deer Creek (Okla.), Stillwater (Okla.) and Edmond Santa Fe (Okla.).
 
Oregon | West Linn (West Linn, Ore.); Record: 26-4
They closed the year with 14 straight wins, bringing their total to 26 on the spring, and won the state’s 6A State Title, an impressive feat in itself while having to go through a really talented Lakeridge team in the semifinal game, earning them the top team in the state of Oregon.
 
Pennsylvania | Warwick (Lititz, Pa.); Record: 24-3
It makes it easy to crown a top team in the state when one of the most talented teams in the state goes through their difficult schedule in this way and walks off the field with the 6A State Title which is exactly what Warwick did, winning seven straight playoff games to get it done.
 
Rhode Island | North Kingstown (North Kingstown, R.I.); Record: 25-3
After playing one of the more difficult schedules in the state, they posted an impressive 25-3 record and took home one of the most talented rosters in the region when they beat Bishop Hendricken (R.I.) in the championship series two games to zero for the Division I State Title.
 
South Carolina | Berkeley (Moncks Corner, S.C.); Record: 25-5
They won the state’s top title in claiming the 5A State Title over Fort Mill and it capped off what was a really strong season as a whole against a tough schedule. They had multiple wins on the year over a talented Lexington (S.C.) team and went a perfect 10-0 in their region play as well.
 
South Dakota | Roosevelt (Sioux Falls, S.D.); Record: 23-2
This Roosevelt team fell short of claiming a state title but the season they had as a whole was too good to ignore as being the top team in the state. They posted the best record in the state at 23-2 and had many strong wins including one over Sheyenne, our top North Dakota team.
 
Tennessee | Farragut (Knoxville, Tenn.); Record: 30-11-1
This team had some shaky parts to the spring but certainly got hot at the right time as they closed the year with 12 straight wins, including seven in the playoffs, and won the 4A State Title, the top in the state after playing one of the most difficult schedules in the country.
 
Texas | Sinton (Sinton, Texas); Record: 36-1
This is always an extremely difficult decision as Texas has so many talented teams across the different classifications, but Sinton made their year hard to ignore as they went 36-1 and won the 4A State Title in dominant fashion. They had tons of upperclass talent on this roster and it’ll go down as one of the best seasons in Texas’ 4A history.
 
Utah | Riverton (Riverton, Utah); Record: 25-8
It was back-and-forth for most of the spring who the most talented team in the state was and it was able to be decided in the 6A championship series as Riverton took down American Fork in three games to claim the title, capping off what was an impressive feat to get to 25 total wins.
 
Vermont | Champlain Valley Union (Hinesburg, Vt.); Record: 25-5
They fell to an upset in the semifinal round of the Division I playoffs, but this team was widely regarded as the top in the state throughout the spring and have been chosen here as so. They put together a strong 25-5 record and fell in the playoffs to the eventual state champion Essex.
 
Virginia | Hanover (Mechanicsville, Va.); Record: 23-2
There were high expectations for this team coming into the spring given the talent on the roster and they closed the year with 18 straight wins to claim the Class 4 State Title. The beat a very talented First Academy (Fla.) team at the NSHI and had their only two losses came from that event against a pair of highly touted California programs.
 
Washington | Olympia (Olympia, Wash.); Record: 26-3
This is another state that is back-and-forth on the team’s that get crowned as the best, but it came down to only a couple this spring and Olympia beat Puyallup to win the 4A State Title, the highest classification in the state. They also added wins over Issaquah (Wash.) and Richland (Wash.) to reach the state title game, a pair of impressive resume boosters.
 
West Virginia | Hurricane (Hurricane, W.V.); Record: 32-4
Racking up 32 wins in any state is impressive but doing so in West Virginia is certainly a feat that should be recognized. They put together impressive stretches, including finished with eight straight wins on their way to winning the 3A State Title.
 
Wisconsin | Whitefish Bay (Whitefish Bay, Wis.); Record: 25-3
Seen as the top team in the state going into the year, they fell short in terms of their playoff run but put together an impressive enough regular season to earn the top team in the state at the end of the spring. They went 25-3 with one of the state’s top rosters and had a number of really impressive wins along the way.

Creighton Tuzzio (2024, Clarinda, Iowa) took the ball in the semi-final game and was able to get on the bump and carve for his team. Tuzzio is a taller 6-foot-6, 210-pound frame with plenty to like in the operation. The right-handed pitcher has a slower and more controlled operation as he works through the delivery. He lifts the leg up around the belt and then works through a three-quarters release with good whip through it. The fastball worked up to 86 mph on the fastball and held in the low- to mid-80s. He creates some angle on it with the taller & projectable frame. It runs arm-side and can be a problem for right-handed hitters. He also showed a low-70s curveball with a bigger 11/5 tilt to it and good depth to miss some bats. The 5-foot-10, 175-pound, RHP did his job for his team today to keep them in the game. Flores throws with a high leg lift and creates some good motions towards the plate with his whippy action. Flores has a great feel for the zone and pounded strikes at a 66% rate. Flores generated swing and miss after swing and miss and it was clear he was in control out there on the mound. James Sherry (’26, Aiken, S.C.)- the 6-foot-1, 155-pound right-handed pitcher tossed a complete game for Xtreme Xposure Baseball-Bennett in an 8-1 win over 2 Way Athletics 16U. A primary outfielder, Sherry finished with 15 strikeouts and just one walk while controlling the zone at a 65% strike rate. Appearing in only his second PG tournament, Sherry turned in another great pitching performance after being selected to the All-Tournament Team at the 2023 16U PG Southeast Labor Day Classic. The shortstop has one of the best hit tools in the class and has tremendous feel for the barrel. The swing is quiet and simple, staying loose through the zone. The ball jumps and the parts really work. At short, Johnson looked silky with good actions, range, and plenty of arm strength across. Patrick Kovacs (2026 Knoxville TN) was dominant in his outing in game two of pool play for Exposure National. The southpaw tossed three scoreless innings allowing two hits while striking out eight. He showed plus command of the fastball dotting it to both sides of the plate while working off the corners at times. Patrick sat 75-78 topping at 79 multiple times throughout. He mixed in a tight breaking ball with two plane movement that he had no problem mixing in any count keeping the opposing hitters off balanced in the box. Coming from a mid 3/4s slot there was some deception within the operation making it tough to pick the fastball up out of the hand. The frame has plenty of athleticism within with plenty of more room for additional strength as he continues to mature. Kovacs should be a fun follow as he continues to progress through high school. Jack Harley (2024, Mendham, NJ) put together a dominant performance at the plate in the WWBA NEQ, leading his team to a coveted Jupiter bid while also earning MVP-honors. The 6-foot-1 left-handed hitter showcased his advanced bat-to-ball skills on several occasions. He batted .643 with two doubles, a home run and six stolen bases. Harley utilizes a repeatable, synced-up stroke with clean separation into launch. He has a great feel for the barrel and creates good strength at impact to all parts of the diamond. The future Hokie recorded a hit in all six of his games and proved to be a reliable bat at the top-of-the-order for Clubhouse 2024 EvoShield. Nathan Caldwell (2026, Columbia, S.C.) looked the part in the batter’s box as the Team Elite three-hole hitter had one of the hardest hit balls of the day. There’s really impressive bat speed and the ability to create violence and rotational acceleration through contact. He missiled a single during the game and there looks like there’s going to be pretty significant impact potential long term. He’s a strong kid with good indicators and offensive tools to like. Drew Borkowski (2026, Huntley, Ill.) showed plenty to like in the arm as he got the start in game one on the day for GRB. At 6-foot-1, 170-pounds he’s got a lanky frame with long limbs and plenty of room for physical projection.
