Pride grabs 18u Labor Day title

Photo: Perfect Game

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Judging from the tone of his voice, it was apparent Corey Baptist didn't intend to sound boastful after helping his FTB Pride squad win the championship at 2nd annual PG WWBA 18u Labor Day Classic.

When asked how the weekend went for the Pride and if the team thought coming into the event it might have a good chance at winning the championship, Baptist grinned a little sheepishly before he answered with unquestioned humility.

"It's been pretty good and it's a good way to start the fall," he said. "We've got a good team and I'm glad we came out on top. Honestly, I think we knew (coming in) we had a pretty good shot at making it, and luckily we took home first place."

The top-seeded FTB Pride completed a perfect 6-0 three-day holiday weekend by clipping the No. 7-seeded Nola Baseball Monsters, 6-2, in the title game played Monday morning at beautiful jetBlue Park, the spring training home of the Boston Red Sox.

With up to 10 top-200 prospects in the classes of 2013 and '14, the Pride were viewed by many as the favorites coming in. Head coach George Gonzales said he was able to use the team's pitching depth to make a run to the championship, utilizing "pitchers only" through pool-play and keeping everyone on a 75 pitch-count.

"That, and with Corey Baptist swinging it like he did, and the bats really came alive ... and we just stayed hot 1-through-9 (in the order)," Gonzales said.

FTB (6-0) jumped to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning against Nola Baseball (4-2), and after the Monsters countered with two in the top of the second, the Pride scored single runs in the third, fourth and sixth to seal the deal.

Baptist (2013, Seminole, Fla.) was 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI, putting a capper on a tournament in which he was named the Most Valuable Player. In six games, Baptist was 10-for-18 (.566) with a pair of doubles, a triple, home run, eight RBI and five runs scored while sporting a .579 OBP and 1.523 OPS.

He led a group that quickly came together over the three-day weekend.

"Some of us played together in the summer and then we got some (other) guys together," Baptist said. "I enjoy playing with these guys and we all get along pretty good; we never have any arguments. I like these (PG tournaments) a lot because you usually see pretty good competition and you see good pitching."

Righties Austin Garcia (2013, Labelle, Fla.) and Luis Alvarado (2014, Salinas, P.R.), and lefty Eugene Vazquez (2013, Orlando, Fla.) combined to throw a five-hitter at the Monsters in the championship game. It continued a tournament filled with fine performances from FTB pitchers. The FTB staff compiled a 0.52 ERA and struck out 41 in 41 innings.

FTB Pride right-hander Cre Finfrock (2014, Jensen Beach, Fla.), the 81st ranked national prospect in his class who has committed to Central Florida, was named the Classic's Most Valuable Pitcher. Finfrock, who was not on hand at Monday's championship game, pitched five hitless, scoreless innings and struck out five in one appearance.

Gonzales explained that a core group of six young prospects on this team have been with him for almost a year, but others have been sent to join the FTB Mizuno and FTB Chandler squads in an effort to bolster the entire organization from top to bottom.

"We're really trying as a program to establish three very good teams," he said. "We kind of divide up all the infielders and position players, as well as the pitchers. But we've been pretty successful with the Pride, and we've been able to be in championship games quite a bit and we're very blessed to be able to do that."

FTB Pride finished as runner-up at last year's PG WWBA World Championship in Jupiter, Fla., and Gonzales is hoping to send more FTB teams over there in October to contend once again.

"We've got to figure out how we're going to divide it up," he said. "We plan to come, show up and represent. Last year we were one inning short of winning that title, and this year we're coming with a chance to get back in that championship game and finish what we didn't get done last summer."

The Pride were dominant in their three pool-play wins, outscoring three opponents by a combined 18-2 to grab the No. 1 seed in the eight-team playoffs.

Right-handers Brandon Lawson (2013, Spring Hill, Fla., Miami commit) and Puerto Rican top prospects Angel Alicea-Nieves (2013) and Alvarado (2014) combined on a seven-hitter with eight strikeouts in a 3-2 win over SWFL 17u in the quarterfinals. Right-hander Alex McGathey (2013, Treasure Island, Fla.) then threw a six inning four-hitter in a 10-2 thumping of FTB White in the semifinals.

The Nola Baseball Monsters arrived in town from hurricane-ravaged New Orleans very early Saturday morning and went right to work, winning their first two pool-play games by shutout -- 8-0 over Suncoast Reebok and 2-0 over the P.R. Mets. They lost their final pool-play game Sunday morning, 5-2 to FTB Royal, but still advanced to the playoffs as the No. 7 seed.

Once there Sunday afternoon, the Monsters upset the No. 2 Tampa Bay Warriors, 6-4, then whipped No. 6 Orlando Baseball Academy, 9-2, in the semifinals.

Although the PG WWBA Labor Day Classic field included only 20 teams, it proved to be a very competitive event. FTB Pride was the only team to get out of pool-play without a loss or a tie and there were upsets in two of the four quarterfinal games.

"This early in the season, normally, we're not in our best game shape, but the challenges were very good," Gonzales said. "The weather was nice, too; we didn't get beat with that 150 degrees (temperature).

"There's nothing like the Perfect Game events," he continued. "The challenges are there, the coaching staffs you meet on the opposing side know what they're doing ... and the level of ball is still very good, more than you see in any other sanctioning body."

Creighton Tuzzio (2024, Clarinda, Iowa) took the ball in the semi-final game and was able to get on the bump and carve for his team. Tuzzio is a taller 6-foot-6, 210-pound frame with plenty to like in the operation. The right-handed pitcher has a slower and more controlled operation as he works through the delivery. He lifts the leg up around the belt and then works through a three-quarters release with good whip through it. The fastball worked up to 86 mph on the fastball and held in the low- to mid-80s. He creates some angle on it with the taller & projectable frame. It runs arm-side and can be a problem for right-handed hitters. He also showed a low-70s curveball with a bigger 11/5 tilt to it and good depth to miss some bats. The Iowa Western commit threw 5.0 innings, allowing just 1 run, with 4 walks and 6 strikeouts to his credit.   There’s no surprise here, but...

Michael Flores (2026, NC) looking great through 4 innings pitched with 11 k’s. Great command and completely missing barrels. #2023WWBACoastalSophmoreFallInvatational pic.twitter.com/Oqd3WD0E05 — PG Coastal Scouting (@PG_Coastal) September 24, 2023 Michael Flores (2026, Mooresville, NC) put on an electric performance to watch for the SBA Futures 2026 in their matchup versus the Carolina Reds. The 5-foot-10, 175-pound, RHP did his job for his team today to keep them in the game. Flores throws with a high leg lift and creates some good motions towards the plate with his whippy action. Flores has a great feel for the zone and pounded strikes at a 66% rate. Flores generated swing and miss after swing and miss and it was clear he was in control out there on the mound. He sat in the 70-mph range to 79-mph range with his fastball with the ability to pinpoint it wherever he pleased....

James Sherry (’26, Aiken, S.C.)- the 6-foot-1, 155-pound right-handed pitcher tossed a complete game for Xtreme Xposure Baseball-Bennett in an 8-1 win over 2 Way Athletics 16U. A primary outfielder, Sherry finished with 15 strikeouts and just one walk while controlling the zone at a 65% strike rate. Appearing in only his second PG tournament, Sherry turned in another great pitching performance after being selected to the All-Tournament Team at the 2023 16U PG Southeast Labor Day Classic. A high speed look at this 2B from Keon Johnson... #WWBAWorlds @PG_Georgia https://t.co/Ejl8GirIgk pic.twitter.com/ate7ro35cp — Perfect Game Scout (@PG_Scouting) September 24, 2023 Keon Johnson (2026, Macon, Ga.) started off the morning loud, going down to get a pitch down and smoking a double that split the opposite field gap at a 92 mph exit velocity. The shortstop has one of the best hit tools in the class and has tremendous feel for the barrel. The swing is quiet and simple, staying loose through the zone. The ball jumps and the parts really work. At short, Johnson looked silky with good actions, range, and plenty of arm strength across. The game comes easy for the Georgia native, and still just 15, the all-around game is very well-refined for the age.  Jaxson Wood (2026, Hoover, Ala.) finished batting .500 over the tournament, including three extra-base hits. The primary...

Patrick Kovacs (2026 Knoxville TN) was dominant in his outing in game two of pool play for Exposure National. The southpaw tossed three scoreless innings allowing two hits while striking out eight. He showed plus command of the fastball dotting it to both sides of the plate while working off the corners at times. Patrick sat 75-78 topping at 79 multiple times throughout. He mixed in a tight breaking ball with two plane movement that he had no problem mixing in any count keeping the opposing hitters off balanced in the box. Coming from a mid 3/4s slot there was some deception within the operation making it tough to pick the fastball up out of the hand. The frame has plenty of athleticism within with plenty of more room for additional strength as he continues to mature. Kovacs should be a fun follow as he continues to progress through high school. Ryan Riojas (‘26 TN) drives this...

The big and physical 6-foot-4, 210-pound arm threw a complete game, seven inning, one-hit shutout, striking out 13 and walking one. The fastball had downhill life to it, sitting in the 85-88 range for the entirety of the game. Garrison held the velocity and reached back for his fastest bullet of the game, at 89, in the seventh inning. Finishing the outing with 70% strikes, he filled up the zone and went right at hitters. He also induced swing-and-miss on a curveball, featuring late...

Jack Harley (2024, Mendham, NJ) put together a dominant performance at the plate in the WWBA NEQ, leading his team to a coveted Jupiter bid while also earning MVP-honors. The 6-foot-1 left-handed hitter showcased his advanced bat-to-ball skills on several occasions. He batted .643 with two doubles, a home run and six stolen bases. Harley utilizes a repeatable, synced-up stroke with clean separation into launch. He has a great feel for the barrel and creates good strength at impact to all parts of the diamond. The future Hokie recorded a hit in all six of his games and proved to be a reliable bat at the top-of-the-order for Clubhouse 2024 EvoShield. Harley’s build offers a good balance of strength and athleticism, making him a well-rounded prospect with intriguing upside moving forward.  .#VandyBoys commit Aiden O’Connell (‘24, NH) is back on the bump in the #NEQ...

Nathan Caldwell (2026, Columbia, S.C.) looked the part in the batter’s box as the Team Elite three-hole hitter had one of the hardest hit balls of the day. There’s really impressive bat speed and the ability to create violence and rotational acceleration through contact. He missiled a single during the game and there looks like there’s going to be pretty significant impact potential long term. He’s a strong kid with good indicators and offensive tools to like. Drew Borkowski (2026, Huntley, Ill.) showed plenty to like in the arm as he got the start in game one on the day for GRB. At 6-foot-1, 170-pounds he’s got a lanky frame with long limbs and plenty of room for physical projection. It’s a quick arm with solid arm speed throughout and he opened up sitting 85-87 mph with the fastball. The fastball showed good sinking life and he used it to get a lot...
