After Storm, Dallas Tigers Start Hot at BCS

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- A near 48-hour lightning delay has not affected the Dallas Tigers 17U team, who have driven in 22 runs through two games at the 17u BCS National Championship Qualifier in Fort Myers.

“Anytime your offense comes out banging like that, your pitchers got a lot more momentum, a lot more confidence,” Tigers Head Coach Blake Beaven said in a postgame interview. “You don’t have to necessarily think too much, you can just go right at guys and kind of pitch to the lead.”



Due to a tropical storm warning in Southwest Florida over Friday and Saturday, the start of the BCS National Championship was postponed for all teams until Sunday morning.

The sitting and waiting could, in theory, really mess with a team. But when things got underway for the Tigers they didn't miss a beat, easily handling Freshwater Storm National, 10-0, in their first morning matchup at JetBlue Park.

Contributions came from all up and down the order, as six different players registered at least one hit. Catcher Cooper Thomas led the way in the hits department with a 2-for-4 day out of the six-hole in the order, driving in a run as well. Brittain Urbaniak and Easton Andrews both drove in two runs, and DH Andrew Schultz knocked in a team-high three runs.

Directly following that win, they would face off against FTB Rawlings 2023, which was much of the same, a decisive 12-3 victory to bring their record to 2-0 going into Monday.

The Tigers worked four different pitchers throughout the game against FTB, with Ethan Whiddon, Zachary Lyle, Schultz, and Braydon Risley each getting time on the mound. None of four threw over 30 pitches, meaning they are all eligible to pitch again in tomorrow's games, an invaluable outcome for Beaven when he goes about filling in innings the rest of the way.

“I want to see them keep pounding the zone, getting first pitch strikes, letting the defense work, and then the offense will do their thing,” Beavan said. “But really it’s going to come down to our pitching for us, I think if they’re out there giving us a chance, then our offense will come through.”

Back-to-back doubles from Schultz and Thomas got things started for the Tigers’ offense that brought four across in the opening inning. The four runs turned out to be enough to claim another victory, although they tagged on eight more on their way to the 12-3 win.

Nine different players from the Tigers registered a hit, along with six different players driving in at least one RBI on the day.

It is still to be determined who the Tigers will be playing come Monday, but they know what they have to do if they want to contend for a championship.

“Just staying clean on the routine plays and not doing too much,” Risley said.
