Davis Diaz (2021 Pittsburgh, CA) solidified himself as one of the most advanced and polished shortstops in the 2021 class. It was an automatic out when any ball was hit in his direction over the course of the WWBA World Championships. He is an instinctual player with a good first step and takes great angles to balls. With a strong arm and quick transfer combined with the ability to change arm angles, he can make any play on the left side. He also plays with energy and apparent leadership qualities. A right-handed hitter, he has a linear process with a short stroke to the ball. His flat swing stays in the zone and his elite bat-to-ball skills were on display all weekend. He has a patient approach, drawing multiple walks over the course of the weekend. On championship Monday he led off both games with a hit while working counts and notching a couple walks. He was a table setter all event but that doesn’t mean he can’t impact the ball as Diaz pounded a homer on Sunday. An interesting comparison that started taking shape was that of 2019 first round pick Anthony Volpe. There are plenty of similarities, including the huge baseball IQ they share.
