FORT MYERS, Fla. – In a hotly contested matchup with a bid to the WWBA World Championship on the line, the Scorpions Founders Club downed Ostingers Baseball Academy by a final score of 3-2 to capture the 2019 WWBA Florida Qualifier championship. Both teams are extremely talented and the championship game felt like a matchup we would see in Jupiter.

The Scorps got on the board right away with three runs in the first two frames as they quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead. PG All-American Zac Veen roped a double in the bottom of the first inning after eventual MVP CJ Kayfus got on base with a base hit; Veen came in to score later that inning on an RBI groundout. The Scorpions added another run in the bottom of the second with a sac fly as that provided a good amount of run support for starter Chase Dunlap.

Dunlap, a Florida Gulf Coast commit, was very effective over four innings, allowing only one earned run in the process. The righthander mixed in a low-80s fastball that generated a good amount of weak contact when low in the zone and led his impressive three-pitch mix. Dunlap ran into some trouble in the fourth and fifth innings as the Ostingers offense came alive to make it a one-run ball game.

One of the youngest players in the contest, Colby Shelton, who is a 2022 graduate, came through with a big knock to bring in a run and cut the lead to two. Shelton, a Clemson commit, is coming off a strong summer and shows a smooth lefthanded swing. Slugger Brock Wilken came through in the fifth inning to add an RBI groundout and cut the lead to one heading into the late innings.

Kayfus, a Miami commit, showed off his two-way potential as he hopped onto the mound and quelled any thoughts of an Ostingers comeback. The southpaw is a talented pitcher as well with a loose, easy arm stroke and a fastball that can work in the mid-80s with good life. He only allowed a few baserunners, giving up only one hit on the afternoon while providing three scoreless innings.

The offense stood out for the Scorps throughout the entirety of bracket play as they outscored opponents by a mark of 37-10 on the weekend and the offense came through with enough runs to clinch the championship.

Kayfus was named MVP by hitting a blistering .692 to go along with eight runs scored and four RBI; the on-base percentage was an insane .818 as he added seven walks as well.

Brody Norris of the Scorpions was named MV-Pitcher following a strong start during pool play. A Liberty commit, Norris went five strong innings with seven punchouts on only one earned run while running his fastball into the upper-80s to go along with a very good breaking ball.

With the win, the Scorpions earn a paid invitation to the WWBA World Championship in Jupiter, Fla. to be played in mid-October.
