17u WWBA South National Championship: Day 1 Notes

Calin Knight (2020, Montgomery, Texas) was lights out on Saturday, tossing a six-inning complete game for PNT 17u. The righthander finished the game on just 89 pitches, striking out 10 batters and allowing one unearned run. Working exclusively from the stretch, Knight attacked hitters with a heavy dose of fastballs at 85-87 mph, topping at 89 mph late in the game. Knight was also able to keep hitters off balance with sharp slider in the mid-70s, generating swings and misses late in counts. Knight has a lean and athletic frame, with a short, compact arm stroke into an over-the-top slot. Most impressive in Knight’s outing Saturday morning was his command of the strike zone, walking just two batters in the six innings of work. The uncommitted member of the 2020 class has some things to clean up in the lower half and at foot strike, but the projectable frame and fast arm is something to really like about the Texan.




Colton Rozypal (2020, Corpus Christi, Texas) had a multi-hit day on Saturday for the South Texas Sliders 17u – Lynch. The righthanded hitter started his day hot with a roped double over the head of the left fielder. With a 6-foot-2, 215-pound frame, Rozypal has a physical presence in the box. Uncommitted in the 2020 class, Rozypal has an upright and slightly open stance at the plate, with a small leg lift trigger. His quick hands, aggressive path and developing bat-to-ball skills allow him to consistently find his way on base.

Garrett Thompson (2020, New Braunfels, Texas) was another Slider to have a strong day at the plate on Saturday. Thompson finished the game 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI, showing the ability to see the ball deep and drive it the other way. With a lean and athletic 6-foot, 170-pound frame from the left side of the plate, Thompson has room to fill out and add strength as he gets older. Currently uncommitted in the 2020 class, Thompson moves well both on the bases and playing second base, making a couple nice plays during Saturday’s action.

Hector Anguiano (2020, Garland, Texas) showed off his defensive skill at third base during Saturday’s action. Anguiano has a quick first step to the ball, taking away a pair of extra-base hits to the backhand side. With a 5-foot-7, 150-pound frame from the left side of the plate, Anguiano also has quick hands and good bat-to-ball skills on offense. Anguiano got the Dallas Redhawks on the board early with a sacrifice fly to left field, and followed that up later in the game with a hard-hit single to right. As Anguiano continues to grow and mature, the power and arm strength from third base will develop as well.

Garrett Jackson (2020, Katy, Texas) was another infielder to put together an impressive day both defensively and at the plate. Jackson was 2-for-3 at the plate, with a pair of singles and a run scored. With a 5-foot-9, 150-pound frame, Jackson has great barrel feel and control at the plate, highlighted by a perfectly executed hit-and-run in his first trip to the plate. At second base, Jackson was constantly in the right place at the right time on Saturday, making an impressive play on a slow-roller to steal an infield single.

Colson Sledge (2020, College Station, Texas) had a very impressive day at the plate on Saturday, going 3-for-4 with a triple, a pair of singles, and four RBI. Sledge has a fluid swing and a line drive barrel plane from the right side of the plate, and he does a great job of getting his hands extended at the point of contact. With a lean and athletic 5-foot-10, 165-pound frame, Sledge runs well on the bases, stealing a base after his third hit of the day and recording his standup triple with ease. Currently an uncommitted member of the 2020 class, Sledge is an interesting player to keep an eye on as he develops.

Matthew Linskey (2020, Humble, Texas) was dominant on the mound for Adidas Baseball National Team 2020 – Ina on Saturday evening. The tall and powerful righthander tossed four shutout innings, striking out 11 and walking just two. Linskey works exclusively from the stretch with drop-and-drive actions in the delivery, creating good direction down the mound before falling off to the glove side some at release. Linskey throws a heavy fastball at 85-89 mph, and shows an advanced ability to throw quality strikes to both sides of the plate. Though the arm slows up some on the off-speed pitches, Linskey did flash good feel for a curveball with 11-to-5 shape and late depth at 73 mph. Linskey is still developing feel for his low-70s changeup, and the progress of that pitch will be important to the Rice commit’s success at the next level.




Beckett Vine (2020, Houston, Texas) had a strong day at the plate on Saturday. Vine finished the day 2-for-4 with a loud triple over the head of the center fielder. Vine has an even and slightly crouched stance at the plate, and his direct path to contact and line drive barrel plane makes for consistently hard contact. Behind the plate, Vine is an excellent receiver that wins pitches for his pitcher. Moving well, Vine is also able to keep baserunners in check and where they are.

Zachary Easterling (2020, Spring, Texas) had one of the best swings of the day on a triple that went deep to the gap in right-center field. Easterling, who is a Texas A&M commit, has an athletic frame at 6-foot-4, 195-pounds. Working from an even and upright stance at the plate, Easterling has some advanced bat speed and feel for the barrel. One of Easterling’s best tools however is the impressive speed. Easterling made his triple look easy on Saturday, seemingly gliding around the bases. Easterling, who is a top 50 player in the state of Texas, is a name to keep an eye on in the future.

Western Texas College commit Keegan Turner (2019, Liberty, Texas) has a mature, physical frame. He went 3-for-3 at the plate with three singles and one RBI. He showed good bat speed and found the barrel consistently with pull side power. Listed as a primary third baseman, Turner started on the mound for Vendetta Baseball 2020. He threw five innings, allowed two hits and struck out three. His fastball was 77-82 mph with a curveball that sat in the upper-60s.

Coming off a run-rule victory in day one of the 2019 WWBA 17u South National Championship, Stix 2020 Davenport continued to swing the bats well versus Banditos 17u Texas on day two. Leading the way at the plate, Cason Gregory (2020, Cleburne, Texas) went 2-for-2 with two doubles and one RBI. Gregory had a smooth, compact swing and was able to get the barrel out front in his two at-bats.

Starting on the mound for Stix 2020 Davenport was Oklahoma State commitFrancisco Hernandez (2020, Laredo, Texas). The 6-foot-5 righthanded was untouchable on the mound. He threw a six-inning no hitter, struck out 11 and walked one in his dominant performance. His fastball sat in the upper-80s and topped out at 92 mph. He flashed a plus changeup that was in the mid- to upper-70s with solid fading action. Hernandez had a simple delivery, threw from a high three-quarters arm slot with good action. He was able to command his fastball to both sides of the plate, showed good angle and tunneled his changeup well.

Dallas Patriots 17u Stout put on a hitting display in day two of the tournament. Hitting in the leadoff spot, Jonathan Huff (2020, Plano, Texas) went 2-for-2 with a double, a single, three RBI and three runs scored, No. 3 hitter Cade Manning (2020, Southlake, Texas) went 2-for-3 with a triple, a single and one RBI and Tanner Dieleman (2020, Krum, Texas) went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Jonathan Huff is an outfielder who attends Plano Senior High School. He had quick hands, stayed short to the ball, had a linear bat path, showed barrel awareness and created lift in his swing. Defensively, Huff had a good first step and range that allowed him to track down balls in the outfield easily.

Cade Manning is a 6-foot, 185-pound lefthanded hitting shortstop that had a simple, fluid swing. He started with a slightly open stance, a toe-tap into his load and showed opposite field power. Manning had good footwork and charged through the ball with good arm strength and carry.

Tanner Dieleman is a primary third baseman that had a sound approach, quick hands, a level swing and handled the barrel well. Defensively, Dieleman’s arm was playable with above average arm strength, carry and accuracy.

Dallas Baptist commit Justin Lange (2020, Llano, Texas) is a projectable two-way athlete for GPS LEGENDS 17U – PUFFER. On the mound, he had a quick arm, an online delivery with an extended release out front. In one inning of work, his fastball sat 88-90 mph with arm-side run and topped out at 92 mph. He flashed a changeup at 77-80 mph that has potential to be a plus pitch. At the plate, he went 1-for-2 with a solo home run to left field.

Uncommitted 6-foot-7, 220-pound righthanded pitcher Will Carsten (2020, San Antonio, Texas) came out of the bullpen for South Texas Sliders 17us Mayer in the fourth inning. He had a large frame with plenty of room to fill out his already projectable body. He threw from a three-quarters arm slot, had a long arm circle in the back and a good downhill delivery. His fastball sat 85-88 mph with sink while topping out at 90 mph and had a good feel for his slider that was 72-74 mph. Carsten projects to add more velocity with added strength as he matures in the future.

Creighton Tuzzio (2024, Clarinda, Iowa) took the ball in the semi-final game and was able to get on the bump and carve for his team. Tuzzio is a taller 6-foot-6, 210-pound frame with plenty to like in the operation. The right-handed pitcher has a slower and more controlled operation as he works through the delivery. He lifts the leg up around the belt and then works through a three-quarters release with good whip through it. The fastball worked up to 86 mph on the fastball and held in the low- to mid-80s. He creates some angle on it with the taller & projectable frame. It runs arm-side and can be a problem for right-handed hitters. He also showed a low-70s curveball with a bigger 11/5 tilt to it and good depth to miss some bats. James Sherry (’26, Aiken, S.C.)- the 6-foot-1, 155-pound right-handed pitcher tossed a complete game for Xtreme Xposure Baseball-Bennett in an 8-1 win over 2 Way Athletics 16U. A primary outfielder, Sherry finished with 15 strikeouts and just one walk while controlling the zone at a 65% strike rate. Appearing in only his second PG tournament, Sherry turned in another great pitching performance after being selected to the All-Tournament Team at the 2023 16U PG Southeast Labor Day Classic. Patrick Kovacs (2026 Knoxville TN) was dominant in his outing in game two of pool play for Exposure National. The southpaw tossed three scoreless innings allowing two hits while striking out eight. He showed plus command of the fastball dotting it to both sides of the plate while working off the corners at times. Patrick sat 75-78 topping at 79 multiple times throughout. He mixed in a tight breaking ball with two plane movement that he had no problem mixing in any count keeping the opposing hitters off balanced in the box. Coming from a mid 3/4s slot there was some deception within the operation making it tough to pick the fastball up out of the hand. The frame has plenty of athleticism within with plenty of more room for additional strength as he continues to mature. Kovacs should be a fun follow as he continues to progress through high school. Jack Harley (2024, Mendham, NJ) put together a dominant performance at the plate in the WWBA NEQ, leading his team to a coveted Jupiter bid while also earning MVP-honors. The 6-foot-1 left-handed hitter showcased his advanced bat-to-ball skills on several occasions. He batted .643 with two doubles, a home run and six stolen bases. Harley utilizes a repeatable, synced-up stroke with clean separation into launch. He has a great feel for the barrel and creates good strength at impact to all parts of the diamond. The future Hokie recorded a hit in all six of his games and proved to be a reliable bat at the top-of-the-order for Clubhouse 2024 EvoShield. Nathan Caldwell (2026, Columbia, S.C.) looked the part in the batter’s box as the Team Elite three-hole hitter had one of the hardest hit balls of the day. There’s really impressive bat speed and the ability to create violence and rotational acceleration through contact. He missiled a single during the game and there looks like there’s going to be pretty significant impact potential long term. He’s a strong kid with good indicators and offensive tools to like. Drew Borkowski (2026, Huntley, Ill.) showed plenty to like in the arm as he got the start in game one on the day for GRB. At 6-foot-1, 170-pounds he’s got a lanky frame with long limbs and plenty of room for physical projection.
