Garrett Backus is a 2022 C/3B, MIF with a 5-9 155 lb. frame from Unadilla, NY who attends Unatego Central. Medium, square shouldered frame with some present physical strength to build and additional room to fill. Ran a 7.98 60-yard dash. Primary catcher, begins with a higher set behind the plate, receives the ball out front and works into a shorter arm action on throws, upper body dominant release and can incorporate additional lower half into actions, occasionally under the ball at release, 2.19 best pop time. Fields the ball out front with a wide base in the infield, develop actions and footwork, takes short steps to the ball, similar short arm action on throws. Also pitched, slight gather on backside with some drop and drive in mechanics, works to a three-quarters slot with a short and compact arm stroke. Fastball topped out at 73 mph, short running life to arm side and mixed a curveball at 66 mph with short 11-5 shape and some depth; pitched to contact. Righthanded hitter, begins with a high hand set and a lower back elbow in the box with an even stance; utilizes a high leg lift trigger. Weight starts on backside, occasionally mistimed with release of weight shift, shows a long swing path through the zone with a linear plane. Shows ability to work to all fields, creates lift at times and looks to elevate. Excellent student.
